About
Dr. Chi-Tung Cheng is a Clinical Professor in the Department of Trauma and Emergency Surgery at Linkou Chang Gung Memorial Hospital and a joint-appointed Assistant Professor in the Department of Artificial Intelligence at Chang Gung University. He founded and leads the CGMH Trauma AI Lab, one of the first clinician-led research groups in Taiwan focused on applying deep learning to trauma care.
He received his MD from Taipei Medical University (2007) and his PhD in Biomedical Informatics from National Yang-Ming University (2021), and was a visiting scholar at the Malone Center for Engineering in Healthcare, Johns Hopkins University (2019–2020).
His clinical practice covers trauma care, emergency and critical care, and hepatobiliary and gastrointestinal surgery. His research bridges the operating room and the algorithm: identifying clinical problems at the bedside, building deep learning solutions with real-world hospital data, and validating them where they matter — in the emergency department.
Research Interests
- Deep learning for trauma imaging — plain radiographs and computed tomography
- Computer-aided diagnosis and clinical decision support
- Human–AI collaboration in clinical workflows
- Trauma registry and clinical database research
- AI-assisted medical education
Selected Work & Honors
He is the first author of PelviXNet, a physician-level deep learning algorithm detecting universal trauma on pelvic radiographs, published in Nature Communications (2021), and of one of the earliest studies applying deep learning to hip fracture detection on plain pelvic radiographs (European Radiology, 2019). He has authored more than 130 journal articles with over 2,000 citations, was listed among Stanford University’s World’s Top 2% Scientists (2025), and holds a patent on methods and systems for medical image analysis. His work has been recognized with the National Innovation Award (2020, 2021, 2025) and the Future Tech Award (2024).
